Royals vs. Cubs Pitching Matchup: Dobnak vs. Boyd
Randy Dobnak draws the start for Kansas City, stepping into a role that puts the sinker-heavy right-hander in a meaningful late-summer spot. Dobnak's stuff plays best when he keeps the ball on the ground and limits walks — the Cubs will look to work counts and put runners on base to test that approach early.
On the other side, Matthew Boyd brings experience to the hill for Chicago. The left-hander has made a career of mixing his fastball with off-speed offerings, and Kansas City's lineup will need to be disciplined and ready to do damage when Boyd leaves something in the zone.

Keys to Watch Against Chicago
Bobby Witt Jr. in the Middle of Everything
Slotted in at DH and hitting second, Witt Jr. is the engine of this offense. His at-bats against Boyd will set the tone — if he gets on base and forces the Cubs' defense to account for him, Kansas City's lineup has a chance to do real damage through the heart of the order.
Caglianone and Perez as the Power Threats
Jac Caglianone hitting third and Salvador Perez cleaning up at four gives Kansas City legitimate power in the middle of its order. Boyd will need to be careful working around those two, particularly with Witt Jr. on base ahead of them.
Dobnak's Ground Ball Rate
The Cubs can string together at-bats. Dobnak's effectiveness depends on inducing weak contact and working efficiently through innings. If he can avoid the big inning, the Royals' bullpen should be able to hold a lead.
Starling Marte's Role in the Lineup
Marte hitting fifth adds another experienced bat to what is a veteran-heavy lineup from four through six. His presence gives Perez some protection and keeps the Cubs' bullpen honest late in the game.
Prediction
This is a winnable game at Kauffman Stadium. Dobnak needs to be sharp early, but the Kansas City lineup — with Witt Jr., Caglianone, and Perez in the middle — has the firepower to get to Boyd if he leaves pitches up. Royals take this one, 4-2, on the strength of a quality start from Dobnak and a go-ahead hit from the heart of the order.
