Preview
The Kansas City Royals welcome the San Francisco Giants to Kauffman Stadium on Monday, July 20, for a 7:40 PM ET first pitch. Michael Wacha gets the ball for Kansas City against Giants right-hander Trevor McDonald in what shapes up as an interesting mid-summer interleague test. With Bobby Witt Jr. anchoring the lineup and a loaded Giants roster featuring Rafael Devers and Luis Arraez making the trip to KC, this one has the makings of a compelling evening on the K's turf.
Starting Pitching Matchup: Wacha vs. McDonald
Michael Wacha draws the assignment for Kansas City. The veteran right-hander has been a reliable presence in the Royals' rotation, and pitching at home at Kauffman Stadium gives him a familiar environment to work with. Wacha's ability to mix his arsenal and pitch to contact makes him a steady hand in a game like this.
San Francisco counters with Trevor McDonald, a name that figures to face some scrutiny against a Kansas City lineup that has legitimate pop from top to bottom. McDonald is the less-established arm in this matchup, and how he handles the middle of the Royals' order will go a long way toward deciding this game.

Keys to Watch Monday Night
Bobby Witt Jr. vs. the Giants' Pitching
Witt Jr. batting second gives Kansas City its most dangerous weapon early in the lineup. How McDonald handles the young shortstop in his first couple of plate appearances will set the tone for San Francisco's evening. Witt Jr. has the ability to change a game with both his bat and his legs, and the Giants cannot afford to let him get comfortable.
Wacha Keeping Devers and Arraez in Check
San Francisco's lineup is built around contact and patience at the top with Arraez, and pure power in the middle with Devers. Wacha needs to attack the zone and avoid falling behind hitters, particularly against that duo. If he can keep Arraez off the bases and limit Devers' damage, Kansas City's bullpen should be in good position later in the game.
Jac Caglianone's Matchup Against a Newer Arm
With Caglianone slotted third and McDonald being a less-proven starter, this is a matchup worth monitoring closely. Caglianone has the kind of raw power that can punish a pitcher who leaves anything over the plate, and a young arm making his case against a lineup this capable is exactly the kind of situation where a big swing can happen early.
Prediction
Kauffman Stadium gives the Royals a genuine advantage Monday night, and the pitching matchup favors Kansas City. Wacha is the more proven arm in this spot, and McDonald faces a lineup with enough length to grind through at-bats and find weak points. Expect the Royals to work counts, get on the board early, and let Wacha do his thing deep into the game. Kansas City wins, 5-3.
