Preview

The Kansas City Royals head to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers on Wednesday, August 12, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 PM ET at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium. Daniel Lynch IV gets the ball for Kansas City against former Royal Eric Lauer, who will toe the slab for the home side. This is a road test against one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball — a lineup that features Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Kyle Tucker, and Mookie Betts — and how the Royals respond will say plenty about where this club stands heading deeper into the 2026 season.

Pitching Matchup: Daniel Lynch IV vs. Eric Lauer

Lynch IV draws what is arguably the toughest assignment any Royals starter can face this season. The left-hander will have to navigate a Dodgers order that has no soft spots, top to bottom. Lauer, meanwhile, knows this Kansas City roster well from his time in the American League, which adds a layer of familiarity to an already intriguing matchup. Neither pitcher's season stats are available heading into this one, so the focus shifts entirely to execution on the night. For Lynch IV, limiting damage in the early innings against Ohtani and the top of that Dodgers order is the first and most critical task.

Royals Lineup to Watch

  • Bobby Witt Jr. (SS, No. 2): The face of this franchise and the engine that drives the Kansas City offense. Witt needs to get on base and create chaos early against Lauer.
  • Jac Caglianone (1B, No. 3): The young first baseman slots into the heart of the order. How he handles a veteran left-hander in a tough road environment is worth monitoring.
  • Salvador Perez (C, No. 4): Salvy anchoring the cleanup spot is as dependable as it gets. The Dodgers will not overlook him, and he will not overlook a mistake.
  • Starling Marte (RF, No. 5): Marte's presence in the five-hole gives the Royals a legitimate threat even after the middle of the order has been pitched around.
  • Carter Jensen (DH, No. 6): The young designated hitter continues to get regular at-bats in a lineup role that asks him to produce against quality arms.

Keys to the Game

Lynch IV Must Limit the Damage Early

Ohtani leads off for Los Angeles, and getting through the top three of Ohtani, Andy Pages, and Freddie Freeman without giving up crooked numbers is essential. One bad inning against this lineup can snowball fast. Lynch IV needs to establish his fastball and work efficiently to keep the Royals bullpen from being overextended late in the game.

Kansas City Needs Production From the Bottom Third

Nick Loftin leads off for the Royals, and the bottom of the order — Isaac Collins, Tyler Tolbert, and Josh Rojas — will need to contribute. Against a Dodgers pitching staff with depth, Kansas City cannot afford to give away outs at the bottom of the lineup. Loftin setting the table and Tolbert using his legs if he gets on base could be the difference in a close game.

Road Environment at Dodger Stadium

UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium is one of the more hostile environments in the National League. The Royals are the visiting club, and Lynch IV will need to stay composed with the crowd behind every Dodgers at-bat. Experience and poise on the mound matter here.

Prediction

The Dodgers lineup is simply too deep and too dangerous for this to be a comfortable night for Kansas City. If Lynch IV can give the Royals six innings of competitive baseball and the offense scraps together a few runs against Lauer — who they know — this game stays close. But the edge goes to Los Angeles at home. Royals fall, 5–3, in a game that nonetheless gives Lynch IV and the young core valuable experience against premier competition.
