Preview

The Kansas City Royals travel to Progressive Field on Saturday, August 29 for a 4:10 PM ET first pitch against the Cleveland Guardians. Daniel Lynch IV gets the ball for Kansas City against Cleveland's Foster Griffin in a divisional matchup that carries real AL Central weight this late in the regular season. Bobby Witt Jr. leads a lineup that includes Salvador Perez, Jac Caglianone, and Nick Loftin, giving the Royals a lineup with legitimate run-scoring potential against a Guardians club that is never easy to beat at home.

Royals vs. Guardians Starting Pitcher Matchup: Lynch IV vs. Griffin

Daniel Lynch IV draws the start for Kansas City. The left-hander has been a key part of the Royals' rotation, and his ability to work deep into games will be critical on the road. Lynch IV will need to navigate a Guardians lineup that features one of the most dangerous No. 3 hitters in the American League in José Ramírez, who punishes any mistake left over the middle of the plate. Getting through Cleveland's top of the order — Steven Kwan, Chase DeLauter, and Ramírez — without putting runners on base early is the assignment.

For Cleveland, Foster Griffin takes the mound. The Royals will be looking to work counts and get into the bullpen if Griffin shows any vulnerability. Kansas City's lineup, from Witt Jr. through Perez and down to the bottom of the order, has enough contact hitters to manufacture runs if Griffin struggles with command.

Keys to Watch for Kansas City

  • Bobby Witt Jr. setting the table: Batting second, Witt Jr. is the engine of this offense. How he performs in the first couple of at-bats often sets the tone for how many runs Kansas City puts together.
  • Jac Caglianone in the middle of the order: Hitting third, the young outfielder has a chance to prove he belongs in a lineup spot that demands production against quality pitching.
  • Salvador Perez as the anchor: Perez at first base and batting cleanup gives Kansas City a veteran presence in the heart of the order. His ability to drive in runs with two outs or with runners on is as reliable as it gets.
  • Silencing José Ramírez: Lynch IV has to keep Ramírez from beating him. Ramírez hitting third for Cleveland is a constant threat, and the Royals cannot afford to pitch around the lineup just to get to him — there are dangerous bats on either side.
  • Bottom of the order producing: Tyler Tolbert, Isaac Collins, Matthew Lugo, and Luke Maile round out Kansas City's lineup. If any of those spots can contribute a hit or a walk, it takes pressure off the top of the order to do everything.

Prediction

This is a winnable road game for Kansas City. Lynch IV is capable of giving the Royals six quality innings, and if the offense can get to Griffin early and put Cleveland in a deficit, the Guardians' lineup — while dangerous at the top — has some vulnerabilities in the middle. Expect a competitive, low-scoring game typical of AL Central divisional play. Royals 4, Guardians 3.
