Preview
The Kansas City Royals make the trip north to Target Field on Tuesday, July 28, for a 7:40 PM ET divisional showdown with the Minnesota Twins. Seth Lugo gets the ball for Kansas City against Twins right-hander Taj Bradley. With both clubs competing in the AL Central, every game in this series carries real weight. The Royals send out a lineup anchored by Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino, and young outfielder Jac Caglianone as Kansas City looks to pick up a road win against a divisional rival.
Royals vs. Twins Pitching Matchup: Seth Lugo vs. Taj Bradley
Lugo has been one of the more reliable arms in the Kansas City rotation this season. The veteran right-hander brings a cerebral approach to the mound — he works multiple pitch types, commands both sides of the plate, and rarely beats himself with walks. Against a Minnesota lineup that can punish mistakes, Lugo will need to be precise early and keep the ball down in the zone.
Bradley is a name Royals fans should know. The Twins' young starter has the kind of stuff that can make a lineup look uncomfortable in a hurry. He can reach back for swing-and-miss velocity and has shown the ability to go deep into games. Kansas City will need disciplined at-bats and a willingness to work counts if they want to get into the Twins' bullpen.

Keys to Watch for the Royals
Caglianone and the Young Core Producing in the Middle
Jac Caglianone batting third is a statement. The Royals are asking him to be a run-producer in a meaningful spot in the order, and how he handles Bradley's stuff will set the tone for this offense. He has the raw power to do damage, but Bradley can miss bats. This matchup is one to watch from pitch one.
Perez Anchoring the Lineup at Cleanup
Salvador Perez at cleanup in the DH slot keeps his bat in the game without the defensive demands. Perez is always a threat, and Minnesota's pitchers can't afford to let him beat them with a fastball in a hittable count. If the Royals get men on base in front of him, this game could turn quickly.
Lugo Navigating Buxton in the Heart of the Order
Byron Buxton batting second means Lugo will see him multiple times. When healthy and locked in, Buxton is one of the more dangerous hitters in the American League. Lugo needs a plan for him and needs to execute it. Keeping Buxton off the bases is critical to keeping this game manageable early.
Prediction
This is a tight divisional game between two clubs that know each other well. Lugo giving Kansas City six solid innings is not an unreasonable ask, and the Royals have enough offense in this lineup to scratch across runs against a starter with Bradley's profile. The bullpen matchup late will matter. Expect a competitive game decided in the seventh inning or later. Royals take this one on the road, 4-3.
