Preview

The Kansas City Royals welcome the Minnesota Twins to Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, for a 7:40 PM ET first pitch. Randy Dobnak takes the hill for Kansas City against Minnesota's Joe Ryan in what shapes up as a compelling AL Central divisional matchup. With Bobby Witt Jr. slotted second in the order and a lineup built around power and speed, the Royals have the pieces to make life difficult for Ryan. Division games in August carry real weight, and Kauffman Stadium will be worth being inside for this one.

Pitching Matchup: Dobnak vs. Ryan

Randy Dobnak gets the start for the Royals. Dobnak has built his reputation on inducing weak contact and keeping hitters off-balance — a sinker-heavy approach that lives and dies by the ground ball. His stuff won't overpower a lineup, but it can neutralize one if his command is sharp. Kauffman's dimensions won't hurt him either.

Joe Ryan on the other side is a legitimate challenge for the Kansas City lineup. Ryan is a strike-thrower who attacks with a hard four-seamer and a sharp slider. He can run up strikeout totals, and the Royals will need disciplined at-bats to keep their offense moving. Getting Ryan into deep counts early is the blueprint.

Keys to Watch Tuesday Night

Bobby Witt Jr. at the Top of the Order

Batting second, Witt Jr. is the engine of this offense. When he's on base, the Royals are a different team. He has the ability to change a game by himself — with his legs, his bat, and his instincts. If he gets going early against Ryan, Kansas City's lineup can snowball in a hurry.

Jac Caglianone's Power Threat

Hitting third, the first baseman represents one of the most intriguing bats in the order. Caglianone has legitimate raw power, and Ryan's four-seamer — while effective — can be ambushed when a hitter is locked in. One mistake pitch to Caglianone can end up in the fountain.

Dobnak's Ground Ball Rate

The Twins will look to work Dobnak for walks and wait for him to elevate. If Dobnak keeps the ball down and generates consistent contact on the ground, he gives the Royals a chance to go deep into this game and preserve a bullpen that matters in a division race context.

Royce Lewis as the Danger Bat

Lewis batting fifth for Minnesota is the hitter the Royals cannot afford to beat them. He has the talent to do damage against any pitcher. Dobnak will need to be especially sharp when Lewis comes to the plate with runners on base.

Prediction

This is a winnable game for Kansas City at home. Dobnak's ground-ball profile is a legitimate fit for this matchup, and the Royals lineup — anchored by Witt Jr., Caglianone, and Perez — has enough firepower to scratch out runs against Ryan. The edge goes to whoever gets the early advantage in the pitcher's duel. Expect a close, low-scoring game decided in the seventh inning or later. Royals win, 4-2.
